Right to Read Course:
Teaching Foundational Literacy Skills
You will have access to the webinars for a period of four months, starting from the date of your registration.
The Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta is pleased to offer a Right to Read course to educators: Teaching Foundational Literacy Skills
Teaching Foundational Literacy Skills (TFLS) Course provides educators with research-based information, strategies, and activities for teaching foundational literacy skills that are essential building blocks to strong word recognition and spelling skills.
Skills Covered:
- Phonological awareness & phonemic awareness
- Phonics
- decoding (reading)
- encoding (spelling)
- sight word recognition
Teaching Foundational Literacy Skills is the first course of the Literacy Assessment Certification that enables educators to administer the Assessment of Foundational Reading Skills (AFRS) assessment tool. All the assessment documents are included as part of the certification.
Right to Read – Literacy Assessment Certificate (LAC)
is awarded to educators who complete:
Course #1 – Teaching Foundational Literacy Skills (TFLS) Course
Course #2 – Assessment of Foundational Reading Skills (AFRS) Course
Upon completion of both courses, educators will be certified to administer the Assessment of Foundational Reading Skills tool to students and will be provided the AFRS documents for their use.
Note: Educators who have recently taken the original Right to Read – Reading Readiness Screening Tool course, please contact LDAA for re-certification.
Teaching Foundational Literacy Skills is also a stand-alone course for educators teaching students in Kindergarten through grade 3, as well as older struggling students and English Language Learners.
